Camp Frequently Asked Questions
Where are your camps held?
Our camps are held on the Carleton University campus primarily in the Minto Centre and MacKenzie buildings.
I did not receive a confirmation package, how can I find out if my child is registered and where can I get the confirmation package information?
If you did not receive a confirmation package its contents (other than the parking pass) are available Here on our website. To confirm a registration please call our office at 613-520-2600 x5007 or e-mail director@vv.carleton.ca. If you had requested the package be e-mailed to you please check your junk mail folder as some free e-mail accounts do not recognize Virtual Ventures e-mail addresses.
What is the Extended Program?
The Extended Program offers before and after camp care for campers. The cost for 2008 is $30 per camper ($24 on 4 day weeks). The Extended Program allows campers to be dropped off as early as 8am and picked up until 5pm.
Do the campers go swimming? Are there any scheduled sporting activities during the week?
No, we do not offer swimming. Lunch time sports are encouraged and equipment is provided, however participation is not enforced. Campers go outside at lunch and take breaks during the day as necessary.
What is your instructor to camper ratio?
The Explorers and Nybbles camps are at an 8:1 ratio, the Terabytes, Innovators and girls@vv camps have a 9:1 ratio. Volunteers also accompany Instructors during camp time, so the ratio is in effect lower.
Are your instructors trained in First Aid?
We require all of our instructors to be trained in First Aid and CPR. Our instructors also have inclusion training (for children with disabillities), and complete WHIMIS training through Carleton University.
Why do your camp divisions follow grade levels? Can I move my child to a higher level?
Camp divisions follow grade levels so campers are with their peers. It is for this very reason that we do not move campers up grade levels. Instructors develop their curriculum to cater to all campers, regardless of their previous knowledge of computers and technology.
Are the children on the computer all day?
Although most of our activities are computer based, our campers spend lunch time outside (weather permitting). The younger camps take more frequent breaks throughout the day. Also, some workshops and projects do require time off the computer (for example: electronics and LEGO.)
What are the camp hours? Where do I drop off and pick up my child?
Camp runs from 9:00am-4:00pm for most campers, while children registered in the extended program start as early as 8:00am and end as late as 5:00pm. This year pickup and drop-off will be located at the Bell Theater in the Minto building and in 5010 Minto for campers registered in the extended program.
How many weeks is it possible to sign up for without repeating any curriculum?
It depends on the specific camp. Generally, it's approximately 3 weeks; however, we offer specialty camps on specific weeks that cover a more specific topic. For more information, contact the Camp that pertains to you.
When are the parent tours? Where are they held?
Parent tours are held on the Friday of the camp week at 3:00pm. Parents and guardians are asked to meet in the Minto Lobby where volunteers will direct them to where the slideshow and tours will start. Parents may sign out their children at any point during the tour by checking out with a Virtual Ventures Staff Member.
I have registered in other Carleton Camps, why don't you have my child's information?/ I have registered in another Carleton Camp, can I switch my registration over to Virtual Ventures?
Virtual Ventures Summer camps are independent of other Carleton University camps and we do not share the same accounts or registration databases. Registrations cannot be switched over from another camp to our camp or vice versa.
Do you offer a bursary program? Is financial assistance available?
We do offer a bursary program for those that qualify. For more information and an application please visit the Bursary Section of this website.
What is provided for the Friday lunch?
For the Friday lunch we provide pizza (cheese or pepperoni), juice and a sweet (and naturally peanut free) treat.
Why do you have a girls-only camp?
girls@vv was created to address low female participation, especially in the Virtual Ventures Senior camps. The aim is to increase awareness and participation for girls in technology.
